Sometimes a girl needs a little help with looking refreshed. You all know what I'm talking about. Extra concealer, a little blush, and of course, some under eye cream. My veins are really close to the surface so I always have some sort of sad circle under my eyes, and when I'm really tired, it's pretty hard to hide. I have tried and posted about other eye creams before like Derma-E and Smashbox.
My latest endeavor is a cream from Mineral Fusion. I believe the entire line is gluten free and have tried both the mascara and their revitalizing eye treatment. The mascara was great, except it's not water proof; that's kind of a deal breaker for me. The eye creme, it's really a soft, gentle cream that has peptides to firm and brighten the skin.
Unlike Derma-e, which is a thicker cream that needs to be rubbed in instantly, and sort of acts like a collage, getting rid of the dark saggy puffiness. It's unlike the smash box brand too, which is a thin, completely shiny creme, that makes your skin sparkle. Do I feel like it makes a difference? Yes, but you might need a second application at lunch, depending on how your day is going.

Avocado Beauty Products
I have come to love avocados, and avocado potato chips, so when I came across chapsticks, soap, and body products made from avocado oil I had to give it a go. Bella Vado, a southern California company, produces avocado oil, which is high in monounsaturated fats (otherwise known as the good fats :-) because they can actually reduce your cholesterol). They then use their avocado oil to make various beauty products. I tried their sweet orange avocado chapstick and their avocado hair pomade.

Elemental Herbs
Whenever I'm at the store I check out what kind of chapsticks are near the register. I recently discovered Elemental Herbs Chapstick, and found they make an all healing balm, and sunscreens as well. The company is based in California, and they seem to have a pretty straightforward philosophy- "offering natural healing products that are good for people and good for the earth."

Beauty Without Cruelty
A new beauty product line on the shelf means a must try in my book. We're not talking blush or lipstick, but conditioner and face lotion. BWC, Beauty Without Cruelty is the brand. Not everything from them is gluten free, but they do have a nice tab on their website that lists out the gluten free options. I have been trying out their leave in conditioner for about the last month and I really like it. I'm more used to a spray leave in, versus a cream, which is what this one is, but if your hair is in need of extra conditioning, this seems to work well.I use it about every three or four days; after I towel dry, I evenly disburse about a finger tip's worth throughout my whole head. I use a flat iron on a regular basis, and noticed a big difference with my bangs being less frizzy since I started using this stuff. Just be careful to not use too much or your hair wi
ll get overly stiff when it dries.I've also been using their daily face lotion with SPF 15. I like that it doesn't really have a scent to it; not even basic lotion smell really. It's a thick cream and a little can go a ways, but don't overly rub it in, or it will peel a little. It's almost like you need to let it cool or set. For about $12 a bottle, I think it's a nice medium between cheap, bad for your skin lotions, and more high end cosmetic brands. I will certainly by the leave in conditioner again but I'm still on the fence with the face lotion.
Leave in Conditioner Ingredients:

Kiss My Face Lip Balm
On a scale of 1 to 10 out of all the chapsticks I've tried out, I give this one a 2. And considering I also tried one of their deodorants and it didn't really seem to work for me, I'm not sure I'll be trying anything else from this brand.

Biotene Toothpaste
I double checked that the product line was gluten free, which it is, and now I am almost enjoy brushing my teeth. I've used both the dry mouth toothpaste and the sensitive toothpaste, and really like them both. The flavor/taste is unbelievable mild, and not minty at all. If you're not satisfied with your toothpaste, I highly recommend giving this brand a try.

Dr. Bronner's Naked Lip Balm
Dr. Bronner's is a long standing company, offering organic and fair trade soaps and beauty products. They have a complete line of organic lip balms: lime, peppermint, ginger, and what they call Naked- which is the one I decided to try. Yes I know, I already had plenty of sticks in the house, but a couple were low, and will be out soon, so I spent the $2 on yet another stick of lip balm. I like that it contains beeswax, without being the first ingredient, because I find blends without beeswax in them melt much too quickly in your pocket when the weather heats up. It has absolutely no scent from what my nostrils are telling me, and a very mild tasty, from what my husband tells me. It's soft, but not overly soft, and keeps my lips moist for a relatively long time.On a scale of 1 to 10 out of all the chapsticks I've tried out, I like this one above average, and give it a 8. Infact taking everything from price, packaging, taste, and texture into consideration, I'd say Yes to Carrots and this Naked lip balm from Dr. Bronner's are currently my top 2 favorites.
(Ingredients: Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Organic Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Tocopherol)

Lizard Lips
Starting to be active and outside again, I find myself wanting a good lip protector. I learned on my honeymoon that you can in fact sunburn your upper lip and it was partially because I wasn't using a lip balm with sunscreen. As soon as I saw this new lip balm on the counter at the store I knew I had to try it. I also knew that my husband would think I'm crazy, but this makes 14 active sticks of lip balm in my house. I use every single one of them; I like variety and having a back up if I lose one. What kind I say- I'm a lip balm addict.
Anyhow, my newest purchase was Lizard Lips, with an SPF of 22. It's a gluten free, paraben free, and petroleum free product. I have their original, but in the process of researching the product for this post, I discovered it comes in 4 flavors!, including Tangerine Dream, which greatly excites me. The product, regardless of flavor, is super soft. I mean it's like a hard stick of chapstick that's been sitting in your car on a medium warm day. Not so soft that it falls apart, but just nice and smooth. It's certainly not waxy like I found Badger Balm to be.
Additionally, some lip balms that contain SPF have a funny taste to it, because just like lipstick, we all inadvertently end up eating our chapstick, but I don't get that from this product. If you've read some of my previous posts regarding lip balms, you'll know my husband's experience is a big part of my decision process of which product to use. I have sticks that I only use when I'm at work, or when we're not together, because they're too waxy, or funny tasting to him. His take on the lizard lips- " Not very waxy, I don't taste the sunscreen, it's ok, but not great."
(Active ingredients (sunscreens):Avobenzone 3% Octinoxate 7.5% Oxybenzone 6%. Inactive ingredients: Aloe, Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Comfrey, Grape Seed Oil, Lanolin, Natural Flavor, Sage, Sal Butter, Shea Butter, Stevia, Sweet Almond Oil, Vitamin E.)

Badge Balm
I stumbled upon yet another gluten free lip balm and of course I had to try it. Badger balm was a product I found online and wanted to try, and then there it was on the shelf at Ulta. The basic chapstick stick is about half the size of this .25oz stick, and those usually sell for $2 or $3, but this one was $5. In fact it's so much thicker you can actually coat both of your lips at the same time, instead of doing the top and then the bottom. I suppose that's a plus because it's a time saver, but it's kind of strange, just because I'm used to chapstick being a particular size.Another semi strange thing about it is that the rounder to make the tube advance is at the top of the stick instead of the bottom. I can understand a companies deserve to try and change up a design concept, but why try to change a design that seems to work so well for so my other companies.
Similar to other lines Badger Balm comes in multiple flavors and I decided to try out the lime rocket. I like the flavor, but it does feel a little thick and waxy. I always do the kiss test with my husband to see if he wipes it off right away, and so far the only brand he doesn't mind is Yes to Carrots. He immediately knew I was wearing a different lip balm when I tried out this one. Also I notice it doesn't seem to keep my lips as moist for as long. In the end I'll use the stick as a backup, but it's not my favorite.
(Ingredients: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Cocoa Butter, Golden Yellow Beeswax, Castor Bean Oil, Extract of Aloe Vera, and Extracts of Rosehip, & *Seabuckthorn Berry, Essential Oils of Lime, Litsea Cubeba, and Tangerine)

Zambeezi Lip Balm
Of course I had to pick it up to see what it was all about. There are two different varieties: one with sun protection and one without. Since it's not yet the super sunny season here in California, I bought the one without sun protection.
This product goes on smooth, but is not as soft as Yes to Carrots, which isn't really a bad thing. In fact, it is really moisturizing, and got rid of some cracked lips I had from being out in the cold, snowy environment one weekend. It also as a reasonable price point of around $3 which is pretty much my price cut off. The one slightly negative thing I have to say about it is if you don't like lemongrass you probably won't like this, as it has a distinct lemongrass flavor/taste to it. I don't mind it, but I will say depending on how I'm feeling I would rather use a fruity flavored lip balm. In any case, I have added it into my chapstick mix.
Ingredients are as follows:
organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic sunflower oil, organic jojoba oil, lanolin, organic mungongo oil, organic lemongrass oil, organic peppermint oil, organic rosemary oil, vitamin e.

Stop Looking Tired: Uee Smashbox
I had one of those mornings a couple of weeks ago, and was so glad that I had the Smashbox Photo OP under eye brighter, which my sister bought me for Christmas. It's actually listed as one of their top sellers, and I completely understand why. I've tried other basic concealers, but they never helped. This produce is amazing, and am so glad it is gluten free! Just one little stroke under each eye, rub it in, add a little basic powder over the top and you'll look as good as new. The small tube sells for $18, but if you have the same kind of problem, it is worth every penny.
A majority of the Smashbox cosmetic lines is gluten free, but be cautious, as the following items DO CONTAIN GLUTEN (Last confirmed Sept 2009) :
Bionic Mascara
Layer Lash Primer
Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder
Halo Eye Shadow
Doubletake Lip Color
Lip Treatment and Tinted Lip Treatment
Reflection High Shine Lip Gloss

Yes to Carrots!
I stumbled upon a new brand of Chapstick I am completely in love with, and by extension my husband is in love with. As previously posted, I have tried many lip balm products but time and time again I found myself coming back to Chapstick Brand all Natural Stick. This product however has become more and more difficult to find, so much so I bought a half a dozen on the web. I'm now half way through my set and have not seen it back on the shelves, so I once again sought out other brands in case it's being discontinued. Now, I say...fine, let it be discontinued, I have a new lip lover who is gluten free, soy free, and paraben free: Yes to Carrots.
Yes to Carrots has
three product lines, each of which feature the companies key ingredients: carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The Yes to Carrots line is for those with normal to dry skin, providing beta-carotene through the entire line of lip balms, hair and skin products. Beta-Carotene has been shown to improve skin health (one example here), and since skin is the largest organ, why won't we want to take good care of it. There is also the Yes to Tomatoes line is meant for those with oily skin, and the Yes to Cucumbers, for those with normal to sensitive skin.
Within the Yes to Carrots line there are 5 flavors of lip butter: Melon, Berry, Mint, Carrot, and Citrus. I have tried both the melon and the berry, and like them both. Now here's the kicker as to why I love this product. Every time I kiss my husband he wants to wipe his lips, because he hates the feel and taste of most lip products. He was most tolerant of the natural stick from Chapstick, but he would still wipe it off. This stuff, he barely notices it. Yes...finally, after 8 years I think I have found a true winner. It's comparable to the Chapstick Natural line in price, $2.99, and the ingredients all sound good to me.
They also make lip tints and lip glosses for those of you who like that extra glimmer of color.
Yes to Carrots Melon Contains:
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Cera Alba (Beeswax)*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Flavor, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*,Tocopherol, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract*, Cucumis Melo Cantalupensis (Melon) Seed Extract*, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Extract*, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract*, Limonene*, Linalool*, Citral*. *Organic

Gluten Free Hair Care: HEAD Organics
If you're new to the gluten free diet have you thought about all those other things besides for the food that might have gluten in it? I know it took me awhile to convert all my beauty products to ones that I knew were safe for me. And if you are gluten free, are you sure your beauty products are?I tried out the trukid line and liked it, but I like to explore my options, so I'm currently trying out the HEAD brand. They make a shampoo & conditioner combo, as well as individual shampoo and conditioner, and of course, all those other needed hair products: style wax, hair spray, leave in conditioner, etc. I really like the smell of all of their products, and in fact my husband can't stop sniffing my head sometimes when I use the leave in conditioner. All of their products seem to make my hair feel soft and silky, and a little seems to go a long way. So if you're unsure if your current hair care regime is gluten free, or if you can't seem to figure out what in your "diet" continues to cause a reaction, or you just want to try a new hair product, consider treating your HEAD.
Final note: the also make trial size bottles, and Gluten Free Specialty just got them in. Great for holiday stocking stuffer or any travel :-)

Organic Essence Lip Balm
Recently I was given a new lip balm to try from Organic Essence. Now before I share my thoughts on this product I have to tell you that I am a lip balm freak. I go through a tube a month for sure, maybe more. My dad used to use the original "chapstick", the one with the black label, the entire time I was growing up. I used that one for a long while, and then switched over to their newer 100% natural lip butter line a couple years ago. I've tried at least a dozen kinds, but I always end up coming back to "chapstick".So with that said, you know it's tough to please me in this department. It can't be too waxy, it can't have a funny taste, or make my lips warm, it definitely can't be mint flavored (I hate mint), it can't have a tint, it needs to be reasonably priced, and most importantly, it actually needs to moist my lips, and not just for 2 minutes. Does Organic Essence fit the bill? Well, they offer their new lip balm in 5 varieties: almond, grapefruit, mint, vanilla, and natural. I tried out the almond flavor. It comes in a new eco-friendly tube, so you have to squeeze the heavy paper packaging to advance the stick. The cap itself can be difficult to put back on, so that I didn't like, but it is slightly larger than the average stick, so that makes up for the cap issue.
With regards to texture, I did not find it as smooth going on, but once you pucker your lips together, it has this nice, almost melting sensation, and it smooths out. Another plus is that it does not have a funny taste, at least not for me. Some products linger, they taste like medicine or sunscreen, or something similar. The breaking point is the price, coming in at what I consider a steep $6.99. I personally can not afford to pay that much for lip balm, and why would I when I can buy a perfectly decent product for $2.99 a stick. Yes there are a few extra ingredients in the "Chapstick" compared to the Organic Essence line, but none of them sound nearly as bad as what is in basic "Chapstick." Conclusion, the Organic Essence lip balm is a great product; I'd use it if I won it, or somehow obtained it for free or practically nothing, but otherwise, I've got to stick with my pocketbook-friendly Chapstick.
Organic Essence Almond Lip Balm Contains:
Beeswax, Sunflower Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Flavors and Tocopherol (Viatmin E)

Smashbox Cosmetics
I don't wear a lot of make up but it's good to keep up on which brands/products are and which brands/products are not gluten free. All of Afterglow Cosmetics remain gluten free, and are produced in a dedicated facility. Another brand that a lot of gluten-free people are aware of is Smashbox. As of September 2009, I am told that mostly all Smashbox products are gluten free. The list below are their products that are NOT gluten free:

Healthy Hair
So recently I switched over to Trukid shampoo and conditioner, and my hair is now super soft! (full review here). I do not wear makeup on a regular basis, but I do spent money on maintaining my hair, and I have two product recommendations for you to help promote healthy hair growth, in addition to the Trukid line. Fo
r years I have been taking biotin daily. It promotes the growth of hair and nails, and you can buy 1,000 mcg or 5,000 mcg, and I tend to lean towards the stronger dosage. It's not going to necessarily make your hair thicker, but it will make it grow, so whether you're losing hair or you want to grow it out, this product really helps. And for only $10 a bottle of 120 pills it will last you about 4 months. Plus, I recommend the NOW brand, as right on the bottle it states "contains no sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, milk, egg, shellfish, or preservatives."
Recently I also started using a scalp treatment from Nioxin. I called the company from the store to confirm that this particular prod
uct was gluten free, and was told all Nioxin products are safe for me to use. This 3.4 oz bottle ran me about $25, but after a steady week of using it my pillowcase was no longer covered in strands of hair that fell out in the middle of the night. Sure it is normal for everyone to lose a few strands of hair everyday, but I was losing more than I normally do, and now, I believe thanks to this product, my hair is back to normal. It's meant to remove any build up of product, etc. that likes to clog up your hair follicles, and promote hair growth. The company and the store clerks where I bought it tried to tell me it wouldn't work, or work as well if I did not pair it with their brand of shampoo and conditioner, but that's just a sales pitch. In any case, my hair is currently healthy and shinny, and I did it within the restrictions of being gluten free.
