GF Experience: King's Fish House, Carlsbad, CA

While visiting my mother-in-law-to-be in the San Diego area I decided to venture out for dinner one night. I had previously inquired if the King's Fish House was familiar with the GF lifestyle and I received a speedy response from the manager:

"Yes, we do have gluten free items on our menu. Of course we will steer you away from wheat products, and I believe soy is off limits. Often, our guests with Gluten allergies opt for grilled seafood, vegetables, and the like. Just highlight to your server that you have a Gluten Allergy, and they will guide you through the items on our menu that are gluten free.

The waitress greeted us and brought us waters and then I dove in. She seemed pretty on top of it, and shared that all the fresh fish from the charbroiler are just seasoned with salt, pepper, and butter. Also some of their skewers could be made GF and as for sides, the grilled vegetables and fresh spinach were safe. In addition their French fires are made in a dedicated fryer. They also offer a small selection of sushi options, which you can substitute sushi rice for steamed rice. The one thing I was disappointed with was that for a seafood joint, they do not use real crab in their sushi rolls and they will not substitute it for real crab. Oh well.

In the end I ordered the Philly sushi roll and the wild shrimp with vegetables and French fries. The fries weren't fabulous but any kid would love them. The shrimp, however, were cooked, to perfection! Excellent service overall and would suggest to anyone, gluten free or not. (Located right across the street from the Carlsbad outlets).
