Pica Pica Maize Kitchen

Since I knew my husband and I would be traveling through Napa, CA I did some research ahead of time and found a new place to try out: Pica Pica, inside the Oxbow Market. If you're allergic to corn this isn't the place for you, but if you can have corn and are gluten free, this is a place you must try. In fact I asked the woman in front of us in line for a recommendation and it turned out she was gluten free too!

Pica Pica is a some-what "fast-food" Venezuelan restaurant: casual with a relatively simplistic menu. You can have a maize'wich (grilled cheese on sweet corn bread), an arpeas, or a cachapas, with 10 different filling options. And all of that is gluten free. And for sides, they offer yucca fries and sweet plantains. Again both gluten free.

I ordered a Pernil Arpea: pulled pork, tomato, and avocado stuffed inside a corn flat bread, with side of yucca fries, and my hubby got a Chorizo Arpea: Chorizo sausage, cheddar cheese and tomatoes inside a corn flat bread, with a side of sweet plantains. Absolutely everything was good, although we didn't really love the plantains.

I just wish their location was closer to home. :-) To see some live footage of our visit check out episode 8 of GFree TV

Plantains are bananas basically. A woman told me this at the grocery the other day. I have tried them and they don't do much for me. A lot of starch too. The sandwiches look really good. I used to have a recipe for Arapas that are Puerto Rican. Love those but they uses regular flour. Maybe I can make a few changes. Who knows?

Hey Debbie! I met you last week at the GF store, nice to meet you! I know you and your husband travel a lot, so I was wondering if you have any suggestions for places to eat in the Monterey/Carmel area. My mom's coming in town in a few weeks and we are staying there. Feel free to email me if that's easier too.

To answer Jen's question (and Jen you don't have your email addy listed in your profile so hopefully you'll see this, but would love it if you shoot me an email- link under my pic on blog) the few places I've heard that are accommodating in that area are: Estéban Restaurant, P.F. Chang's, Islands Burgers & Drinks, Full Moon, and Ocean Sushi, although I can't vouch for them as I have never been to them personally. If you happen to stroll through Santa Cruz however, you should check out Mobo Sushi, which I have previously posted about. Best of luck, and when you get back you'll have to share where to go and where not to go. :-)
