Happy Hamburger

Natural Food Works, otherwise known as Farmers Kitchen Cafe, is a gluten free company based in Davis, CA. They have fresh breads, rolls, and cookies delivered to Gluten Free Specialty every Wednesday and Saturday, which is where I picked up some yummy sourdough sandwich rolls for hamburgers.

Last summer we did not have one hamburger for dinner because of the lack of a decent gluten free bun, and gluten free bread just cracks in half from the thickness of the burger and its toppings. However, this year will be different. These rolls are best fresh, but are decent a day old, and you can always freeze them to preserve them. Anyhow, we had our first burgers of the season this past week, and I thought it was fabulous! My husband who is not gluten free, said he had had better gluten free bread, as he found the bun dry and too stiff. I will say that because they are handmade they are not consistent in thickness, and the first batch I bought I thought were more light and fluffy like real bread, then this go around, but these rolls are still quiet good.

Natural Food Works also offers full baguettes of sourdough, which would be great for some homemade garlic bread, hotdog rolls, homemade pastas, brownies, and bioregional salads. If you ever have the opportunity you should stop by their resutrant in Davis, but keep in mind they do require reservations. In any case, I recommended trying their breads.
