Cheap Fun

With the rising cost of movie admission and the obsession with video games my group of friends and I still find great enjoyment out of playing card/board games. I wouldn't quite call them old fashioned though, as it's rare for us to pull out Life, or Monopoly, but instead you'll find us playing things like Acronymity, Taboo, and Don't Make me Laugh. Our game collection continues to grow, but we've never paid full price for any of them. We've gotten some as gifts, but our main source of new games is thrift stores. You'd be amazed with how many games we've gotten at a thrift store that is still in shrink wrap, never played! We have a monthly game night amongst all of our friends; a cheap evening full of laughs! I challenge any of you who haven't had much fun lately or stuck on the couch watching tv, to host a game night, whether it's with family or with friends. Even with extremely busy schedules, and not necessarily living close together, we have managed to keep up this tradition for a year or more and now that some of our friends have moved closer it should make things slightly easier to coordinate.

My game recommendation for couples: Split. A card game that's pretty easy to learn, and takes 20-30 minutes to play.

My game recommendation for large groups: Last Word. A fun game where you all shout out a vegetable that starts with P or items found on the beach that starts with T.

When Mike and Deb come for a visit we always make a night or two for games. They always bring something interesting. My all time favorite is Boulderdash. This is a game where if you don't know the answer, you make one up and if someone votes for yours you get points. Love that. Deb votes for mine "a lot". I seem to end up voting for hers too. Its great fun.
