I spent the last week or so in Northern San Diego County and was given the opportunity to try out a few of the restaurants I had been very interested in checking out. There seems to be a fair bit of information about gluten free dining options in San Diego itself but not in the outlying cities, so here are three places you could try out if you're gluten free and looking for someplace new to try.
West Steak House. I had previously mentioned them as having GF dining options but had not dinned their yet myself. This trip I was able to have a nice dinner there. The waitress made me completely at ease as I had told her I was gluten free and had called previously to get some information and she asked what I was interested in and then started rattling off which sauces and sides were safe, etc., which was almost everything. We had a shrimp cocktail to start and the shrimp were gigantic! For the main course I had the three way combo, which was a Filet Mignon, 3 large scallops and 3 baked shrimp, and then I also got two sides: broccoli. and a loaded baked potato, which came with it's own additional plate of toppings. Everything was cooked perfectly and well worth the 3 digit bill for the 2 of us.
Sammy's Woodfired Pizza. They offer GF pizza using Toovaloo crust, a competitor of Still Riding Crusts. Their woodfired pizzas are slightly larger than a single serving pan pizza with 6 small slices for roughly $10. The GF crust is an additional $3, so the cost isn't too high. I ordered the BBQ chicken pizza, which was really good, but it did not reheat well, as does pizza made on the Still Riding Crust. Sure I would go back, and on a scale of 1-10, 10 being fabulous, which is what I currently rank Amici's Pizzeria, Sammy's Woodfired Pizzeria would get a 8.25 from me.
King's Fish House. The staff is pretty well informed as to what is gluten free and if they don't know of the top of their heads they happily check with the kitchen. I have dined here before and this time I tried all new items. We had a shrimp and crab cocktail to start, which for the price I have to say I was disappointed with the serving size, but the main course was quite satisfying. I ordered swordfish, spinach, and a baked potato and Mike had 1.5 lbs of crab. Everything was cooked perfectly and all the sauces were delicious.
In addition to these three places I also had a positive response from the Fish Joint in Oceanside, CA which has been voted one of the best sushi places in all of San Diego county and they are willing to accommodate. (They catered for my all GF wedding, and the sushi was really good). You just need to contact them maybe a day or two in advance and they'll make sure to have gluten free sauce options for you.
