Gluten Free Hot Dog Buns!

I personally did not think gluten free hot dog buns existed! I decided last minute to do something completely off the cuff and different for dinner tonight, as I typically plan out two weeks worth of meals in advance and then make a shopping list. So I went to Raley's, which isn't nearly as good for gluten free items as say Whole Foods, or the Gluten Free Specialty in downtown Sacramento, but anyhow, I wondered the aisles of Raley's pondering what to make and then I saw them- Gluten Free Hot Dog Buns by Ener-G, made out of tapioca. I've had the tapioca bread by this company and it wasn't so bad that I wouldn't buy it again, so I thought I'd try them out.

We grilled up our hot dogs, and toasted our buns. The bun did not fall apart during the toasting process, 2 points. I squeezed on some ketchup and Oli's Sweet 'n Spicy Sauce, and took a bite. The bun once again, did not fall apart, another 2 points. Taste was just ok; minus 1 point. Texture was so-so. A little dry and flaky; minus 1 point. Overall, my reaction is that I would buy them again if I were in a pinch for a hot dog bun but I think I'll try my hand at making some. Oh and you get four buns for $6 incomparison to 8 regular hot dog buns for $2; minus 100 points. LOL.

Well, I again have to agree. I do not care for anything Ener-G makes. To me it is like eating cardboard ....just a touch juicer...which isn't saying much. I make my own buns. They are a little dryer than my dinner rolls which I think is better because they grill well and broil better too without falling apart. You should get hotdog bun shaped pans for this if you are picky about shape. Mostly I use this recipe for hamburger buns, using a 1/2 cup dry measurer sprayed with oil. They freeze well too. Let me know if you are interested.Maybe you can give it a while and tell me what you think.
